Frequently asked questions
Can I play chess without creating an account?
Yes. Make your first move on the home page immediately, with no sign-in or download. The same local game against Stockfish is playable in accessible 2-D or browser 3-D, and switching views keeps the position.
How do I save a game I started without an account?
Your active game and a bounded set of completed games stay on this device. After you create or sign in to a verified free account, replay-valid completed games can be synchronized to your account history; an unfinished game remains local.
Can registered players play online for free?
Yes. A verified Free account unlocks casual and ranked online play, friends, challenges, saved history, settings, replay, PGN tools, analysis, voice moves, and club features.
Does Chess in 3-D work in VR or mixed reality?
Yes. On the Pro plan you can enter VR or mixed reality straight from the browser board. It uses the open WebXR standard, so it runs in any compatible headset browser — no store app or side-loading.
Which VR headsets are supported?
Built and tested on Meta Quest 3 (and Quest 3S / Quest Pro, which share the Meta Quest Browser). Because it is standard WebXR, it also runs on Android XR headsets such as Samsung Galaxy XR in Chrome, and on Pico 4 / Pico 4 Ultra through the free Wolvic browser. Apple Vision Pro can run WebXR in Safari, but Apple has not yet enabled passthrough mixed reality for WebXR, so MR is not available there yet.
What does the Pro plan unlock?
Pro unlocks mixed reality and virtual reality on your headset, plus premium cosmetics. Immediate local 2-D and browser 3-D play is available without an account, and registered account features such as online play, replay, PGN tools, analysis, and voice moves remain free.
Can I play chess with my voice?
Yes. On any plan you can speak moves like "knight to f3" — the board previews the move with highlights, echoes it back aloud, and plays it only after you confirm with a spoken "yes". Opponent moves can be announced aloud as well.
Is Chess in 3-D accessible to blind or low-vision players?
Yes. Every plan includes "Read board aloud", which speaks the whole position — whose turn, the last move, material, and every piece with its square — while highlighting the sentence being spoken.
Can I run a chess club or tournament?
Yes. Create your own club, invite members with owner, admin, and moderator roles, schedule events, and run ladders and tournaments — Swiss, round-robin, arena, and team battles — with an internal club rating. It works for online-native clubs and for managing a real over-the-board club, and it is free.
